On 21 May 2021, Pakistan and China kicked-off the commercial operation of Unit-II of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant. The event coincided with the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between Pakistan and China and also marked the 30th anniversary of civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries.
In order to mark this important milestone, both sides held a virtual ceremony in Beijing and Islamabad which was attended by H.E. Mr. Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The event was also participated by the leading members of scientific community of two countries including Mr. Muhammad Naeem, Chairman of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Mr. Zhang Kejian, the Chairman of China Atomic Energy Authority and Mr. Yu Jianfeng, Chairman of China National Nuclear Corp.
Speaking at the occasion, Prime Minister Imran Khan lauded the project teams of both sides for their professionalism and timely completion of the project. He highlighted that commercial operation of K-II project marked an important step in the history of Pakistan-China civil nuclear cooperation.
The Prime Minister underscored that civil nuclear cooperation was an important dimension of Pakistan-China bilateral ties and has brought huge dividends for both sides in terms of capacity building, technological up-gradation and experience sharing. He said that nuclear energy, as a clean energy resource, would diversify Pakistan fuel-energy mix up and also meet nation’s growing energy needs. The Prime Minister reiterated that as a responsible country, Pakistan along with China, would continue playing its constructive role for expanding the peaceful use of atomic energy for benefit of humankind.
Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency also sent a special video message for the event.
Pakistan and China enjoy close and friendly relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in May 1951. Pakistan was one of the first countries that recognized the People’s Republic of China. Over the years, the relationship has blossomed into an “all weather strategic cooperative partnership”. Pakistan considers China as one of its closest friend and partner and China considers Pakistan as its “Iron Brother”.
